Founded by curator Aleya Hamza in Cairo in 2013, Gypsum is a contemporary art gallery dedicated to thoughtful and ambitious artistic practices from the Middle East and beyond. Through exhibitions, fairs, dialogue, and sustained collaboration, Gypsum is committed to the production of contemporary art and to fostering meaningful, long-term relationships between its artists, audiences, and collectors.

Gypsum is looking for a junior Gallery Assistant to join and support the team with logistics for exhibitions, art fairs, sales and also supports the smooth running of the gallery’s daily operations. The gallery assistant will work directly with Gallery and Programs Manager Sarah Sarofim and Gallery and Communications Manager Jamila Abdel-Razek and their responsibilities include the following: 

  • Manage the gallery database, cataloguing all artworks and ensuring the database is kept up to date.

  • Gather shipping estimates and coordinate collection and transport with shipping agents

  • Update the Sales tracker with current status of sold works and keep track of movements and progress post sale.

  • Coordinate framing of artworks.

  • Produce and distribute certificates of authenticity.

  • Work closely with shippers and gallery technicians on the packing requirements for all works.

  • Create consignment agreement paperwork in consultation with the team.

  • Support the team with exhibition production, installation and deinstallation .

  • Assisting with sales inquiries and directing interested visitors to the appropriate contact.

  • Assisting with designing, updating, and publishing website, social media, and newsletter communications.

  • Welcoming visitors and helping create an inviting experience in the space.

  • Provide additional support to Gypsum staff and larger community initiatives as needed.

    Requirements

  • Demonstrable excellent administrative, organisational and communication skills.

  • Demonstrable time management skills, with the ability to prioritise multiple projects and managing tight and changing deadlines.

  • Focused and reliable.

  • Meticulous attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Evidence of excellent problem-solving skills.

  • Preferable post-secondary degree or diploma in a related discipline.

  • Comfortable with Google Drive and Squarespace.

  • Have access to a computer and a phone.

  • Fluency in English and Arabic, both spoken and written.

  • Ability to do minimal physical labour for the inventory in the gallery.
